Justine Reyes mask collection 2012
Composition
I believe that the focal point is her eyes because everything is covered by the tights except for her left cheek (because of the ripped tights). This picture would have been symmetrical if she didn’t have the ‘mask’ on her face and head but because it’s on the picture is asymmetrical, because the tights have rips and holes in them. When I look at this photo I look at her eyes first as this is the focal point, then I look at her right exposed cheek, next I look at her covered nose and mouth, then her left cheek. Colour & Mood
With this photo Reyes has used various shades of skin tone colours such as white, peachy yellow. The photo has a subtle air to it because of the peachy colours used. Her light brown eyes are the brightest thing on the photo, having every other colour muted makes the audience focus on her eyes. Light & Tone
The light is coming from left side of her face; I know this because that’s the brightest part of her face this causes a shadow on the right side of her face. The different lights and tones create depth and make the photo more interesting. Without the different shades and lighting tones the picture would be simple and this also helps her face to come off the page, it gives it a 3D effect. The shadow gives it a dark twisted mood to it, the ripped tights help back up this mood. |
Justine Reyes
Justine lives and works in New York, but she was born in San
Bernardino California in 1978. All her work is based on identity, history, time
and still life. She has exhibited a lot of her work nationally, places such as Istanbul
and Turkey. She was recently rewarded the juniors choice award from centres
project competition. Her success continued as she received an MFA from the San
Francisco Art Institute in 2004. Her work is very popular as the Humble Arts
Foundation’s 31 Women in Art Photography have exhibited her work also. In 2011
Reyes was included in PDN’s (Photo District News).
Justine Reyes normally takes pictures of close ups of faces. With her mask series her masks are made out of pantyhose’s. The masks are hand sewn and use a variety of different materials such as lace, wire, beads, hair, plastic bags etc. She was inspired by all the saran wrap, packaging etc. that surrounded her, Justine Reyes is also inspired by Dutch Vanitas. In her mask series she blends the idea of the veil with the mask, both in terms of protection and aggression. Analysis 1What can I see?
This picture is a portrait of Justine Reyes wearing a hand made mask. She's wearing a pair of light, skin tone, peachy coloured tights over her head. only covering her head and her eyebrows, which you can see. There's another pair of white ripped tights covering her nose to her chin, so that only her eyes are exposed and a bit of her right cheek because of a rip on the tights. The crotch on the tights are a light, pale yellow, this covers her mouth. There's also some small rips on the tights on the right side of her nose. Feelings and mood This picture makes me think of the protests. These are the kind of wild things you'd associate with protesting, maybe suffragettes. This picture maybe associated with religion, certain religions cover everything and leave out their eyes exposed. In my mind this picture reminds me of women equality. By covering up everything and leaving out her eyes it makes me think of what men used to think women were made for, to be seen but not to speak out. This picture may represent in some peoples mind women equality, in some countries women equality is rare, they have some women equality but no access to everything. I chose this picture because I find it interesting and it has more depth to it, like there is more to this photo. What have I learnt & how will I use what I have learnt?
1. I have learnt how to use materials that have different textures and patterns to make the photo more interesting. 2. I have also learnt that lighting is very important to create the right mood you want. 3. From this picture I have learnt how to use subtle colours and one bright colour to create a focal point. 4. I'll also try and use materials that are ripped and dirty to create the right mood and the right image I want. 5. I have also learnt how to use lighting to make the image look more realistic. |
